Named after the musical instrument legend, Ted McCarty, this model is a collaboration between Paul and Ted, blending PRS technology and design with the essence of classic instruments from the golden age of the electric guitar. The bound 22-fret neck is moderately thickened for improved tone and sustain, and features new vintage-style McCarty LT pickups tuned for a more articulate and dense midrange. The McCarty’s push-pull tone control and three-way toggle switch offer a wide range of tonal possibilities.

In the late 1980s, Paul consulted with Ted on guitar design and manufacturing techniques. Since then, Ted has not only served as Paul’s mentor but also as a dear friend to Paul and all the staff he met at PRS. The McCarty, released in 1994, is a masterpiece that incorporates the skills and knowledge he inherited from Ted McCarty as well as Paul’s own experience as a guitar builder.

“I’ve always said that every part that touches the strings—the bridge, nut, tuning pegs, etc.—is crucial to the guitar’s sound. In developing the McCarty model, we carefully examined each and every part, and through repeated trial and error, we were able to create a wonderful sound that is unique to this model. Like our other models, we completed this McCarty model without any compromises, like a puzzle piece fitting perfectly together.” – Paul Reed Smith.

And in 2024, PRS Guitars will update the tuning pegs used on many Core models to improve sound. The new wing button, designed with a bird inlay motif at the 12th fret, is lighter than the previous metal peg button and reduces string vibration loss, producing longer sustain and a more musical sound. The use of non-locking tuners on non-tremolo models also contributes to further weight reduction. If
