The Special Semi-Hollow features an HSH (humbucker-“single-humbucker”) pickup layout, featuring 58/15 LT treble and bass pickups and a narrowfield middle pickup. The narrowfield pickup suppresses hum noise while delivering the bite characteristic of a single-coil sound and a clear, powerful sound that stands out in an ensemble.

The 5-way blade switch and 58/15 LT coil-splitting mini-toggle switch combine to create 12 versatile sound variations to suit any genre. Turning the tone control down produces a rich, sweet sound, while openness delivers a sparkling tone, allowing for a wide variety of tonal variations.

Other specifications include a maple top, mahogany back, 22-fret, 25-inch scale mahogany neck with a rosewood fingerboard, Phase III locking tuners, and a PRS-designed Gen III tremolo unit. While minimizing the volume difference between humbuckers and single-coil pickups, the semi-hollow body design with f-holes adds a pleasant sense of airiness and depth to the guitar’s tone.

And in 2024, PRS Guitars will update the tuning pegs used on many Core models to further enhance the sound. The new wing button, designed with the motif of the bird inlay with wings spread at the 12th fret, is lighter than the previous metal tuning machine buttons, reduces loss of string vibration, and produces a longer sustain and a more musical sound.
